Collection: 1Country
Country (also called country & western or country music ) is a musical genre that emerged in the 1920s in the rural regions of the South of the United States and the Maritimes of Canada and Australia. Originally, it combined the folk music of some European immigrant countries, mainly Ireland, with other musical forms, such as blues, bluegrass, and spiritual and religious music, such as gospel. The term country began to be used in the 1950s to the detriment of the term hillbilly, which was the way it was known until then, its use ending up consolidating in the 1970s.
Traditional country was played essentially with stringed instruments, such as the guitar, banjo, fiddle, and double bass, although the accordion (of French influence for Cajun music) and the harmonica were also frequently involved. In modern country, electronic instruments are used above all, such as electric guitar, electric bass, keyboards, dobro, or steel guitar.
